Three have been put into production, and one has laid the foundation.
In recent years, Cambodia’s gradually improved infrastructure, low cost of raw material rubber, and preferential policies related to overseas investment have attracted the attention of many tire companies.
The De Chong Funan Canal is good for China’s tire exports.
As an emerging economy in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has abundant raw material resources and a vast market. At present, many important infrastructures have been put into operation or are under construction.
Specifically including: Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, De Chong International Airport, Phnom Penh Sihanoukville Railway Project, Phnom Penh Poipet Railway, and Sihanoukville Deepwater Port Project. Among them, the most important is the De Chong Funan Canal, which started this year.
As a national strategic project in Cambodia, the canal is designed to be 180 kilometers long with a total investment of 12.1 billion yuan (US$1.7 billion). It is located at the source of the Mekong River in the south of Kandal Province, Cambodia. It is jointly built by China and Cambodia and is expected to be completed and opened to navigation in 2028.
At present, Cambodia’s shipping industry faces many challenges. On the one hand, Cambodia’s sea outlet resources are scarce and the sea outlet is not smooth. Although the Mekong River flows through Cambodia, its outlet is in Vietnam, Cambodia’s neighboring country.
On the other hand, although Cambodia is a coastal country, its coast is mostly occupied by mountains, and the mode of cargo transportation between the main seaport Sihanoukville and the Phnom Penh Port on the banks of the Huakong River is still road and rail. Without a smooth waterway, it will not only increase the operating costs of enterprises, but also limit Cambodia’s ability to attract foreign investment. Therefore, after completion, the De Chong Funan Canal will help Cambodia establish a direct sea route, which can reduce Cambodia’s international shipping dependence on neighboring Vietnam by up to 70%. In particular, Chinese tire companies have been deployed in Cambodia in recent years, and it is expected that Cambodia’s shipping costs will be reduced by one third.
